This product review covers the major zinc chemicals of commercial importance:
zinc oxide, zinc sulfate and zinc chloride.
The following pie chart shows world consumption of the three major zinc chemicals:

The rubber industry is the major U.S. market for zinc oxide, accounting for
approximately 58% of 2006 consumption. Consumption in rubber has been slowly
declining as more tires are being imported into the United States. Horsehead
Corporation and U.S. Zinc Corporation are the largest producers in the United
States, accounting for an estimated 90% of total U.S. production. About 41%
of zinc oxide in Western Europe in 2006 was used in rubber production. Other
major markets include use in the production of ceramics and glassware and chemical
compounds. Use in rubber compounds accounted for approximately 66% of Japan’s
zinc oxide consumption.
Demand for zinc sulfate as a micronutrient in fertilizers and animal feed
is forecast to grow at 1–2% annually in the United States from 2006 to
2011, but could grow at 5% if more acres of corn are planted for the production
of ethanol. In 2006, there were eight U.S. producers with a total capacity
of 86 thousand metric tons. U.S. production has declined while imports continue
to increase. In China and Other Asia, lithopone production is the dominant
application for zinc sulfate, followed by rayon production. Major markets for
zinc sulfate in Western Europe include agriculture, electroplating and flotation.
In general, zinc sulfate markets are mature in North America, Europe and Japan
and are expected to stagnate. Zinc sulfate consumption is expected to increase
in regions with zinc deficiency, such as Africa, India, South America and Australia.
In China, consumption is expected to continue to decline, in line with decreasing
lithophone production.
Agricultural use (as a fertilizer micronutrient) accounted for 50% of U.S.
consumption of zinc chloride, followed by water treatment at 25%, fluxes at
13% and other at 12%. In Western Europe galvanizing accounted for 34% of zinc
chloride consumption and the chemical/pharmaceutical industry for 49%. Until
1993, batteries represented the largest market for zinc chloride in Japan.
As the Japanese battery market has declined, galvanizing has become the largest
market for zinc chloride in Japan, accounting for 26% of consumption.
