Process Economics Program Report 167

Published: Aug-83

Aramids or aromatic polyamides were included in PEP Report 94, "Polyamides Other Than Nylon 6 and Nylon 66," issued in 1974. This report is a supplement on this topic.

Three aramids are evaluated. The first one is an all-para aramid filament yarn, made from poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide). The second is a nonpara aramid, poly(m-phenylene terephthalamide), made into sta- ple fiber. We examine both a dry spinning process and a wet spinning process. The third aramid is a copolymer of p-phenylenediamine, tere- phthaloyl chloride, and 3,4'-diaminodiphenyl ether, containing 25% non- para linkages but having fiber properties like an all-para aramid after drawing. For the relevant monomers, we evaluate three processes for p-phenylenediamine, two processes for terephthaloyl chloride, and one for 3,4'-diaminodiphenyl ether.
