PEP Report 83 emphasized the theories of adhesives, discussed various bonding technologies, and broadly surveyed the raw materials, formulations, and performance of industrial adhesives. It also included evaluations of the economics for producing phenol- and urea-formaldehyde resin adhesives (the largest volume industrial adhesives) and natural rubber based pressure sensitive adhesives.
In this report, we broaden the coverage to include the preparation of anaerobic, cyanoacrylate, epoxy, urethane, pressure sensitive, hot melt, and reactive and "aerobic" acrylic adhesives. Also, we have developed the economics for several hot melt formulations and for reactive and "aerobic" acrylic adhesives, illustrating the smaller volume industrial adhesives production where flexibility in formulation and output are desired.
Summaries of patents on adhesives tapes, automotive adhesives, building and related adhesives, electronic and electroconductive adhesives, laminating adhesives, metal adhesives, radiation curable adhesives, and water-based adhesives are included as a supplement to the section containing the patent summary tables (following Appendix B).
Technical information for the study was obtained mainly
from patents, technical journals, books, product literature, and equipment vendors.
