Process Economics Program Report 17

Published: Nov-66

This report describes three process routes for the production of 100 million lb/yr of fiber grade acrylonitrile: propylene ammoxidation,* propane ammoxidation, and propylene cyanization. The once popular acetylene-hydrogen cyanide route was deleted in favor of propylene ammoxidation because of the greatly superior economics of the new process. Propane ammoxidation was included because future improvements could make this process competitive. And the cyanization route was included because carbon and nitrogen are supplied from the same basic raw materials as those used for propylene ammoxidation. At least three process variations for propylene ammoxidation are in commercial use, and one plant is believed to be using the propylene cyanization process. There has been no report of a commercial propane ammoxidation plant.
