This report reviews the commercial and technical developments
in polystyrene that occurred from mid-1968 to about Fall, 1973. It presents
the cost estimates for the production of polystyrenes by the bulk-press polymerization
process and the bulk-suspension polymerization process, the production of polystyrene
foams by the vacuum preexpansion process, and the production of polystyrene
foam sheets by the direct- injection, tandem extrusion process. Biaxial orientation
of polystyrene sheets and films and the preparation of polystyrene structural
foams are also reviewed, but cost estimations are not given because they may
be included in other PEP reports on synthetic papers and foamed plastics.
