In Institut Francais du Petrole's recently announced Alphabutol¨ process, butene-1 is made by dimerization of ethylene. We compare, on both U.S. Gulf Coast and Saudi Arabian bases, the Alphabutol¨ cost of production with that of butene-1 produced in the conventional fashion by distillation of an MTBE raffinate. In both locations the Alphabutol¨ process is more expensive than the conventional route.
