The 1999 PEP Yearbook International

SRIC's Process Economics Program is pleased to announce the publication of the twenty-fourth edition of the PEP Yearbook International in both printed and electronic versions. The 1999 PEP Yearbook International provides up-to-date process economics for 868 processes used to 568 products: chemicals, polymers, adhesives, plastic films, plastic bottles and containers, fibers, and other specialty products; in addition, the Yearbook will cover many refinery-type processes for petrochemical feedstocks. Both processes in commercial use and those under development that show strong commercial promise will be included. Since last year, 7 new processes have been added table of contents).

Production Economics

PEP Yearbook International includes estimates of capital investment, production costs, and product values (production cost, plus 25%/yr before-tax return on total fixed capital) for each product at 3 plant capacities. The base capacity is for a world-scale unit; the larger and smaller capacities are presented to show the effects of scale. Investment estimates are based on "overnight" mid-year plant construction on the U.S. Gulf Coast, with investments for plants in Western Europe and Japan calculated using location factors derived by PEP. Raw materials prices are obtained from industry sources and journals. For each of the 3 design capacities, production costs and product values are given for operation at 100%, 75%, and 50% of capacity.

The Printed Version

PEP Yearbook International is published in three volumes that set forth the economics of chemical production in the United States (Gulf Coast), Europe (Germany), and Japan, respectively. Continuing features in the 1999 edition include: (1) production economics for seven processes in Saudi Arabia and Alberta, Canada, (2) an alphabetical list of raw materials that indicates their unitary consumption in product manufacture, and (3) classification of all products according to their chemical composition. The Yearbook tabulates 15-year historical prices of basic raw materials, costs of utilities and labor, and market prices for the United States, Germany, and Japan. Exchange rates used for conversion to U.S. dollars are also included. All information for each process—a brief process description, a detailed production cost table, and PEP report references—is provided on one page (see the attached example from 1999 PEP Yearbook International).

The purchaser may select one of two versions of the printed Yearbook: (1) English units [e.g., U.S. cents per pound, scf, tons (2,000 lb), gallons]; (2) metric units (e.g., U.S. cents per kilogram, normal cubic meters).

The Electronic Version

An electronic version of the PEP Yearbook International, on one CD-ROM disc, is also available. The electronic version provides easy and quick electronic access to data in the Yearbook, and its contents are essentially the same as those of the printed version. It contains three applications: (1) PROCESS ECONOMICS, (2) RAW MATERIAL/UTILITY CONSUMPTION, and (3) PRICE HISTORY. As shown on the attached figures, many search options, including keyword search, are available. Search results can be sorted and printed or downloaded into database, spreadsheet, and text formats. No elaborate training is required to use the applications.

A proposal detailing 1999 Yearbook costs and conditions of participation is attached. For future details about content, please contact Dr. Shao-Hwa (Sean) Wang by telephone at (650) 859-2272, by fax at (650) 859-5134, or by email at swang@sric.sri.com.
