SRI Consulting Publishes 2008 Propylene Glycols Report
Biodiesel By-Products Fuel New Production Processes
MENLO
PARK, CA. February 6, 2008 Global demand has increased for propylene glycol, which is used to produce a wide variety of industrial and consumer products. Due to increased biodiesel production and its by-product glycerin, new propylene glycol plants are being built utilizing new production processes. These new plants will mean that many more everyday industrial and consumer products will be available made from sustainable materials. Today, SRI Consulting (SRIC) released its 2008 Propylene Glycols report that provides current and comprehensive information on the global propylene glycols industry, producers and trends.
Koon-Ling Ring, Program Director for SRIC’s Chemical Economics Handbook (CEH) said, “It’s exciting that more unsaturated polyester resins, deicing fluids, antifreezes/coolants and liquid detergents will become more sustainable with the use of bio-based propylene glycol.”
SRIC’s 2008 Propylene Glycols report estimates that globally, propylene glycol demand will grow at greater than 3% per year through 2011 and the greatest growth will be in China and some other emerging regions. During this period, the majority of propylene glycol production will continue to be made from the traditional method of petrochemical-derived propylene oxide.
Lead Author and Senior Consultant Henry Chinn commented “From 2005 through 2007, at least seven major companies or joint-ventures announced plans for propylene glycols-from-glycerin plants, but I expect several of these plants will not be built.” Mr. Chinn continued, “Nevertheless, more plants will translate to more competition and competitive pricing.”
SRIC’s Propylene Glycols report contains comprehensive global coverage, supply/demand, market segments and analysis of the competitive environment.
