First-of-Its Kind Fuels of the future Report Provides Valuable Insights into GTL Market/Products—Rising Cost of Oil Spurs Worldwide Interest in GTL Production

MENLO PARK, CA. June 22, 2005 —A comprehensive new report that combines intelligence on catalysis and reactor design with economic perspectives and market overview of the production of synthetic fuels from natural gas using GTL process technologies has just been released by SRI Consulting.

The Fuels of the Future study provides a single comprehensive reference for scientists, engineers, program managers and other policymakers engaged in R&D planning and commercial feasibility studies of GTL projects.   It is also designed to serve as a valuable resource for private industry, financial institutions, and government-led development programs focused on scheduling the various planning stages for development and execution of GTL projects.

“The rising cost of oil has sparked a renewed interest in GTL production,” said Ronald Smith, SRI Consulting Senior Consultant.  “Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) GTL is poised to become an increasingly important component of the world’s energy supply as producers look to monetize ‘stranded’ gas reserves that cannot be marketed with conventional pipeline.”

Divided into eight sections, this first in a series of reports on Fuels of the Future provides:

  • An overview of remote gas strategies
  • A global look at GTL technologies
  • A review of the current status of GTL projects worldwide
  • A profile of environmental and energy efficiencies for GTL technologies
  • Comparative economics and financial sensitivities for current technologies
  • A projection of learning curves of recent developments in catalysis and reactor designs
  • Specific suggestions of the future of GTL R&D and commercial implementation
  • A summary of the markets, developments, technologies and economics

Smith said that the primary driver for future GTL project implementation is anticipated positive economic returns, which are primarily dependent on capital investment costs and the price spread between natural gas feedstocks and the value of GTL products.  However, he added that a major selling point is that the F-T conversion process also makes liquid fuels that are cleaner burning and devoid of the chemicals that cause acid rain and soot.
