Greenhouse
Gases: A Hot Topic
MENLO
PARK, CA. November
16, 2006 While a great deal of attention
has been given to the greenhouse gas impacts of electrical
generation and transportation, relatively little has
been directed toward the chemical industry even through
it is responsible for almost one-tenth of such emissions. Today,
SRI Consulting (SRIC) released its new Greenhouse Gases
Handbook, providing pertinent information needed to
estimate emissions of CO2 and other greenhouse gases
from chemical processes.
The Greenhouse
Gases Handbook covers basic chemicals, processes with significant
carbon intensities, and the ethylene supply chain. Greenhouse
gas emission factors are presented for several locations – the
US Gulf Coast, China, France, Germany, and Japan.
“These
greenhouse gas benchmarks are critical to chemical producers,
regulators and verifiers,” comments Michael Arné,
Director of SRIC’s Greenhouse Gases Program. Arné continues
that “by 2008 the European Union will probably regulate
greenhouse gas emissions from the manufacture of several
large volume chemicals. In the United States, chemical
industry leaders are concluding that eventual emission
regulation is inevitable.”
The Greenhouse
Gases Handbook estimates emissions from three sources:
the chemical process itself, on-site combustion for heaters,
boilers, and other fired equipment plus off-site generation
of electricity. In over 250 pages and 190 tables, each
of the estimates is derived from a detailed conceptual
design of the process as typically commercially operated.
Such designs are based on publicly available patents and
literature plus discussions with operators and licensors.
The designs usually comprise a process flow diagram, a
major equipment list, material and energy balances, as
well as capital and operating cost estimates.
The report
is available as a hard copy or a .pdf file and is accompanied
by an online interactive calculator that enables the user
to estimate emissions for any of the processes at any location.
