SRI Consulting's Global Solvent Report Puts Green Impact in Perspective

MENLO PARK, CA. September 12, 2006 — Solvents are essential chemicals used extensively by major industries throughout the world. Today, SRI Consulting released its “Global Solvent Report: The Green Impact.”  The new report is the first in a series that focuses on Safe & Sustainable™ materials.  It covers all the major classes of solvents by industry sector along with data on production, consumption, chemical characteristics, regulatory status and the market outlook and trends for 117 specific products.

John Pearson, CEO of SRIC said, “Regulatory pressure to use and develop more green chemicals in the energy and chemical industries will continue.  Our Safe & Sustainable™ reports will provide current information that will allow business professionals to effectively manage their businesses in this evolving marketplace.”

Mr. Pearson added, “The Global Solvent Report will be of value to any business that manufactures or uses significant amounts of solvents.  The global market is 20 million metric tons and is of concern to almost any producer of formulated products, worldwide.”

The Global Solvent Report provides in-depth information on the major solvent types: Aromatics, Alcohols, Esters, Aliphatics, Ketones, Glycols, Glycol ethers, and Halogenated solvents as well as over 20 other widely used miscellaneous solvents.

Bob Davenport, Director of Development, stated, “This is a comprehensive report that puts emerging green solvents in perspective with petrochemical-based solvents which dominate the industry. The demand for many high volume petrochemical-based solvents will decline or stagnate due to toxicity concerns. However, many petrochemical solvents are not toxic and will continue to be used indefinitely.  Today, bio-friendly, renewable sourced or novel, new solvents are expensive or have limited utility.  Often green solvents cannot act as direct substitutes for more toxic solvents. This report demonstrates, however, there is an incremental, secular shift toward more eco-friendly solvents.”
