Acetone

Abstract

Global production and consumption of acetone in 2007 was approximately 5.6 million metric tons.  Global capacity utilization averaged 89% in 2007; this was a slight decline from 2006 due to a larger increase in capacity than consumption.  Total global acetone consumption is estimated to have increased by only 3.3% in 2007, and is expected to increase by 4.0% per year from 2007 to 2012, declining to 2.4% per year from 2012 to 2017.  Global utilization rates are expected to average in the mid to high-80s range throughout the forecast period.

Solvent uses accounted for about 33% of global acetone consumption in 2007, followed by methyl methacrylate with 26% and bisphenol A with 21% of total consumption.  Other applications for acetone include acetone cyanohydrin and isopropyl alcohol.
