Adipic Acid

Abstract

Global production and consumption of adipic acid in 2007 was approximately 2.8 million metric tons.  Global capacity utilization was 91% in 2007; this was an increase from 2006 as a result of flat capacity growth coupled with healthy consumption growth.  Global adipic acid consumption is estimated to have increased by 4.1% in 2007, and is expected to increase by 2.7% per year from 2007 to 2012, declining to 1.6% per year from 2012 to 2017.  Utilization rates are expected to remain in the mid to high-80s range.

Nylon 66 plastics and fibers accounted for almost 61% of global adipic acid consumption in 2007, followed by polyurethanes with 24% of total consumption.  Another use for adipic acid is in the production of plasticizers.
