Ethylene Dichloride (EDC)

This World Petrochemical (WP) report on EDC contains complete global and country supply/demand balances for the base year, the past five years and five and ten year projections.  The complete report including the analyses and supply/demand tables contains approximately 160 pages.  There is also a table showing all global producers, their locations, and capacities (current, historical and future) to produce EDC, as well as capacities for derivative products.

Abstract

Global production and consumption of EDC in 2007 was approximately 37 million metric tons.  Global capacity utilization was about 78% in 2007; this was a slight decline from 2006 due to a slight decline in total consumption of almost 1% from 2006.  Global EDC consumption is expected to increase by 4.1% per year from 2007 to 2012, declining to 2.7% per year from 2012 to 2017.  Average global utilization rates are expected to gradually increase throughout the forecast period due to faster consumption growth than capacity growth.

Over 95% of EDC is consumed in the production of vinyl chloride monomer for polyvinyl chloride (PVC) resin production.  Other very small uses for EDC include chlorinated solvents, ethyleneamines, and vinylidene chloride.
